- What Can Be Done For Gallbladder Stones?
-

- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- QUESTION: My symptoms and my doctor both tell me its time to get rid of my
- gallstones. In our discussion, my doctor suggested that I have a new type of
- operation that uses a tube to remove the stones and leaves a very small scar.
- No one else seems to know anything about this operation so I thought I would
- ask you. Is this something they are only doing here, or have you heard
- anything about it? What can you tell me?
-

-
- ANSWER: The new procedure for gall stone removal (it's called "laparoscopic
- cholecystectomy") has been used for about 1 year now, and is now a common
- technique. Surgeons literally rushed to learn this new technique as people
- learned about its value and advantages over the operation then used. A
- laparoscope is a type of telescope that may be inserted through a small
- incision and permits the surgeon to see the progress of the operation.
- Special instruments are used, inserted through trocars (hollow tubes) that
- penetrate through the skin to the site of the operation. When the operation
- is performed by surgeon thoroughly trained in the technique, the operation is
- considered both safe and effective. The indications for this type of surgery
- are the same as for the standard procedure, so your physician was correct in
- recommending the operation to you. I am sure you will not be the first person
- in your area to benefit from this new advance in surgical technology, but I do
- advise that you make a few calls to be sure your surgeon is qualified to
- perform this surgery.
